Every time that I’ve returned to the UK recently, I seem to read one story after another in the newspapers which challenge and question the advantages of eating organic produce. Those stories only seem to question whether the apparent extra costs of organic foods are compensated by the quality and goodness of those products. Many argue that organic foods are no better for our health.
I can only talk about our situation over here in Spain. Firstly, in my opinion, the costs of organic foods shouldn’t be anymore. We are not using any expensive fertilizers or sprays. We plant, we water, we harvest and then we sometimes sell. Simple.
I cannot really comment on the scientific analysis of whether organic products are any better for us, but we can certainly say that our fruit and vegetables taste much better than what we can buy in our local supermarkets. Perhaps it is just that we generally pick our products a few hours before we eat them.
But what the newspaper reports seem to omit is the affect that organic must have on our land.
Our neighbour here in Spain is an extensive Olive farmer. He uses chemicals to spray his land which kills off weeds. His land is barren and dry. He has no birdlife, insects or wild flowers.
Ours land is green but not overgrown where we have plenty of wildflowers and wildlife. Birds, Bees and Butterflies all thrive providing a balanced eco-system.
That is all so much more important to us on the farm and that is why, to us, organic is worth it.
