Rain rain go away……….

Many of our families and friends are complaining about the snow back in the UK, expecting us to be skipping through the wild flowers on a warm and sunny winter’s day.

Well, the winter has brought a few surprises for us too……..

Our rains started about a week before Christmas and it doesn’t seem to have stopped since. We have had a few very pleasant days where the warm sun reminds us of what is to come and where the beautiful Bermuda buttercups open and reach out to the sky.

But, the rain this year has been the worse that I can remember here and in fact, it is the worst rain in the Malaga province for over 30 years.

Local towns and villages have had more than 1/3rd of their annual rainfall in only 24 hours. Houses have collapsed, people have been rescued and mud and rock slides block roads and railways. The bridge to our farm has been under the river several times, leaving us without any access.

We welcome rain to the farm, but now I’ve had enough. Give me the warm spring sunshine and then the rain can come back at the end of the year when I am tiring of the hot summer sun.

So, global warming or not? I’d bet that our weather is much more closely associated with the solar cycle of the sun and sunspot activity, where the activity peaks every 11 years or so. Sunspot activity is known to affect weather and the last high level of sunspots were back in 1999/2000 and so we should be expecting another peak this year.
