Each and every season offers something different on the farm, not just the weather, but the views, the smells and the tastes...
The weather is warm in the Spring but with the occasional rainfall, the farm remains green and lush, with wild flowers and trickling streams.
The orange and citrus blossom hits you as you walk through the farm, and the avocado and olives are also in flower.
During the spring, we are mulching the land to add goodness to the soil, pruning the trees and generally preparing for the hot summer ahead.
The Easter festivities in the local village are endless and the processions and entertainment are stunning. May also sees the Romeria which is a weekend celebration of San Isidro, the Patron Saint of farmers.
The days are hot and the evenings are warm, with very little rainfall. Walk gently whilst admiring the eagles soaring or even glimpse the wild boar later into the evenings.
The fruits on the trees are starting to appear and the almonds are harvested by hand later in the summer.
In August, the main feria or fair arrives in Almogia which is a whole weekend of late night music, feasting and drinking. Around the same time, an important Verdiales festival takes place which is a local style of flamenco.
Autumn is very pleasant with an escape from the high summer temperatures, yet remaining warm. Rain can also arrive in late September or October and the farm starts to turn green again.
The olives are harvested and taken to the mill for pressing into our own Organic extra virgin olive oil.
The pruning starts on the almond and olive trees.
October generally sees the El Dia de la Almendra (the day of the almond) which is a celebration unique to Almogia which sees more than 10,000 visitors who sample all sorts of produce and fayre prepared by locals using almonds. We are hoping to participate with our own home made products.
The winters will be cooler although it can still be very pleasant outside on the farm. We have had plenty of picnics at this time of year! The evenings are cooler, perfect for relaxing next to an open fire.
The oranges, mandarins and lemons are ready for harvest and the avocado trees are abundant with fruits too.
Christmas is celebrated in the normal way but presents are given on the day of the Three Kings, on 6th January, which follows a procession through the village on the 5th where sweets are thrown for children and adults.
